Cheerleading is Not a Sport
Colleges are required to provide equal athletic opportunities to both males and females. A federal judge ruled today that cheerleading is not a sport, and can not be used to meet genderequity requirements.
"Competitive cheer may, some time in the future, qualify as a sport," Underhill wrote. "Today, however, the activity is still too underdeveloped and disorganized to be treated as offering genuine varsity athletic participation opportunities for students."
Quinnipiac University doesn't have to reinstate its volleyball team, but it does have to start a new women's team. The Associated Press reports that Quinnipiac is thinking about a woman's rugby team.
Quinnipiac, along with 7 other universities, also formed the National Competitive Stunts and Tumbling Association, which will help cheerleading to become an official sport.
